A Rumbek head teacher is advocating for free education for girls, arguing that it will motivate parents to send their daughters to school.

Moses Kaman Chawul, who heads Rumbek Girls Primary School, told Good News Radio that the government should support of the education of girls through scholarships.

Mr. Kaman lamented many girls were not free to pursue their education.

He cited the example of a parent who did not want to enrol one of his three daughters because he had already arranged her marriage in exchange for 90 cows.

The head teacher told the parents the girl was very bright and if she finished her education she should be worthy of many more cows.

The father went home, though about it and the next day he came to enrol his daughter.

The best girl in Lakes State in last year’s examination, Ayen Maker Awur, came from Rumbek Girls Primary.

She is pursuing her Secondary School education at Loreto Girls Secondary School in Rumbek after receiving a full scholarship from Lakes State government.
