The humanitarian crisis unfolding in South Kordofan with hundreds of thousands displaced by the fighting that started at the beginning of June is a source of concern for the African Union.
U Commission Chairperson Jean Ping said he was deeply concerned with hundreds of thousands of displaced facing hunger and diseases, due to fighting, aerial bombardment and the interruption of essential supplies.Dr. Ping added that there were also reports of human rights abuses which needed investigation.
He called upon SAF and SPLA to facilitate access by humanitarian agencies to the civilian population in all parts of Southern Kordofan.
Dr. Ping reminded the fighting forces of their obligations under International Humanitarian Law, and urged them to act immediately to enable assistance to reach the affected population.
