The Committee of Economy, Finance and Development in the Southern parliament has called on the GoSS Ministry of Education to decentralize its distribution of scholarships to cover the whole region.
The call comes after public discontent over the unfair distribution of the scholarships by the ministry.Reading the amendments and corrections in the 2010 budget, Dr. David Nairo said the scholarships run by the ministry are not equitably distributed across the ten states and many promising students are not able to carry on with their studies.
The Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly recommended that the ministry decentralizes the awarding of scholarships equitably across the ten states of South Sudan.
The House said that 80 percent of scholarships should go to the states to maintain regional balance and equity while the remaining 20 percent will be managed by the ministry.
The committee asked the ministry to put aside one million pounds to support university students organization since they are hardly funded.
