The Embassy of South Africa has donated a Toyota Prado to the National Election Commission (NEC) of South Sudan to enhance its operational capacity and improve mobility for both national and state-level activities.
Speaking at the official handover ceremony, the South African Ambassador to South Sudan, Mahlodi Muofhe, expressed his country’s support for the NEC in preparation for the upcoming national elections in December 2026.
“It gives me great pleasure, as Ambassador of South Africa, to donate this Toyota Prado on behalf of the South African Government. This gesture is aimed at reducing the challenges faced by the NEC as it works toward preparing South Sudan for the much-anticipated 2026 national elections,” said Ambassador Muofhe.
The Ambassador expressed hope that the donation would allow the NEC to increase its efforts and efficiency in preparing for the elections.
“We hope that this small gesture will enable the Commission to take two more steps than it was able to before,” he said.
The South African Embassy reiterated its commitment to working closely with the NEC to ensure the elections proceed as planned by the Government of South Sudan.
In response, the Chairperson of the NEC, Hon. Prof. Abednego Akok Hacuol, thanked the Government of South Africa for its generous support, emphasizing the timing of the donation as crucial for the NEC’s current preparations.
“This donation has come at a critical moment, as the NEC is preparing to launch civic and voter education campaigns and begin voter registration,” Akok said. “This generosity reflects the strong and enduring historical ties between the people of South Africa and South Sudan.”
Akok also called on the South African Ambassador to urge other African leaders to support the NEC’s work.
“We sincerely thank you for being the first to offer us this kind of assistance,” Akok said. “Now, we ask you to appeal to our African brothers and sisters to join in supporting our efforts as we move toward this new phase.”
The vehicle is expected to play a key role in strengthening the NEC’s ability to conduct outreach across South Sudan, particularly in promoting civic and voter education as part of the electoral process.
