The South Sudan and Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference has spoken out in response to the tragic and senseless loss of life in Sudan, condemning the cold-blooded murder of innocent South Sudanese citizens. In a strong statement, they described the acts as heinous crimes that demand unequivocal condemnation by the Church and all compassionate members of society.

His Eminence Stephen Cardinal Ameyu Martin Mulla expressed solidarity with the victims’ families and identified the oppressive systems and regimes that dehumanize individuals based on ethnicity, beliefs, or political affiliations as the root causes of such violence.

“Dear faithful people of God in both Sudan and South Sudan, we write to you today with heavy hearts, compelled to address the tragic and senseless loss of life that has recently occurred in Sudan. The cold-blooded murder of innocent South Sudanese citizens is a heinous act that we, as a united Church and compassionate society, must unreservedly condemn,” Cardinal Ameyu said.

The Cardinal urged South Sudanese to respond with restraint and compassion toward Sudanese refugees, many of whom are fleeing the same oppressive government responsible for the violence against South Sudanese. He stressed the need to refrain from retaliation and instead called for a response grounded in love and forgiveness.

“Our call is grounded in the principles of love, forgiveness, and understanding that Christ teaches us. Revenge only begets more revenge and suffering, deepening the cycle of hatred that blinds us. Instead, let us extend our hands in solidarity to those who have sought shelter among us, recognizing their flight as part of our shared human experience,” Cardinal Ameyu added.

The Church emphasized the importance of healing, reconciliation, and fostering an environment where all people feel safe and valued, regardless of their background. They called for dialogue, empathy, and efforts to build bridges of understanding, honoring the memory of the victims while striving for a future of peace and justice.

The Cardinal concluded by urging the faithful to uphold the teachings of Christ, promoting love over hatred and hope over despair, as the foundation for rebuilding communities affected by these tragic events.
