The Western Bahr el Ghazal State Transitional Legislative Assembly has formed a 13-member committee to investigate issues surrounding the demarcation and allotment of land at the state’s railway station.
Hon. Joseph Mawut Athian, Assembly Spokesperson and Chairperson of the Standing Specialist Committee for Information, announced that the committee has been tasked with assessing land boundaries and determining the rationale behind recent demarcations.
“The committee has two weeks to report back to the Assembly,” Athian explained, citing ongoing construction on railway land as a key concern that prompted the investigation.
Despite prior orders from Acting Governor Zachariah Joseph Garang mandating the demolition of illegal structures on railway land, unauthorized building continues. This has raised concerns among civil society members, who argue that the railway station should be preserved for its historical significance.
Athian spoke to Voice of Hope Radio, underscoring the Assembly’s commitment to safeguarding the railway land for future generations.
