A tragic lightning strike on Saturday, November 2, 2024, claimed the lives of 14 South Sudanese refugees and critically injured five others at Palabek Refugee Settlement Camp, Zone 8, Block 2, in Lamwo District, Northern Uganda. 

The incident occurred as refugees gathered for a church service in the settlement, leaving the community mourning an unimaginable loss.

The lightning struck during a church gathering, where most of the victims were members of the Nuer ethnic group from South Sudan, who had fled conflict in their homeland. 

The five survivors remain hospitalized in critical condition at Paluda Health Center III, located within the settlement.

Aid organizations and local authorities are now exploring ways to improve safety measures, recognizing the urgent need for enhanced lightning protection within the camp.
