The South Sudanese Minister of Health, Hon. Yolanda Awel, has declared a cholera outbreak in Renk County, Upper Nile State, after cases were confirmed at the Wunthou Primary Health Care Center.

Since October 8, 2024, a total of 33 suspected cases have been reported, with six confirmed as cholera positive. Minister Awel emphasized the importance of preventive measures to contain the spread, encouraging the public to use safe, boiled water, wash hands with soap, and maintain clean homes and surroundings.

“The Ministry of Health received reports of suspected cholera cases from Wunthou Primary Health Care Center on October 8. As of October 11, a total of 33 samples were tested, with six confirmed positive at the National Public Health Laboratory. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported so far,” Minister Awel stated.

Upper Nile State’s Minister of Health, Dr. Byinj Ernest, acknowledged the Ministry’s response efforts while highlighting the challenges posed by flooding, which has displaced many residents and strained sanitation facilities.

“Wunthou, bordering Sudan, has seen an influx of people due to the Sudan conflict, especially in Renk and Mayo counties. Overcrowding, floods, and limited access to clean water and sanitation facilities have contributed to the cholera outbreak,” Dr. Byinj explained.

Dr. Humphrey Karamagi, a representative of the World Health Organization (WHO), expressed his support for the Ministry’s swift actions and noted that all six confirmed cholera patients have recovered.

“It’s a positive sign that all patients with confirmed cholera cases have recovered and returned home. This reflects effective response efforts on the ground, but it’s crucial to remain vigilant against further spread,” Dr. Karamagi remarked.

The Ministry of Health has urged the public to report any suspected cholera cases to the nearest health facility or call the national outbreak hotline at 6666.

This initiative is part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts under the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity.
