Medical professionals at Tonj Civil Hospital have confirmed an alarming rise in measles cases among children. The outbreak was discussed during a live radio talk show on Don Bosco Radio on Friday.
Dr. James Kulung urged the public to take immediate action by ensuring their children receive measles vaccinations as early as possible to prevent further spread of the virus.
“Some parents, even those living near health facilities, delay taking their sick children to the hospital, which is a dangerous practice. Measles is a serious disease that can lead to complications such as eye damage if not treated early. Bringing children to the hospital in time ensures they receive the help they need,” Dr. Kulung advised.
He emphasized the importance of vaccinating children from nine months and older to protect them from the virus.
Dr. David Dut, also speaking during the program, described measles as a highly contagious viral disease spread through the air. He explained that while measles is a single-antigen virus, it can be easily prevented through vaccination.
“Symptoms such as high fever, cough, red eyes, runny nose, and a rash that spreads across the body can be confusing and potentially lethal if not treated promptly,” Dr. David said.
Both doctors reiterated that vaccination is the most effective method to prevent the spread of measles and protect the community.
