Activists expressed concerned that the South Sudan Transition Constitution has failed to be inclusive, participatory and consultative especially on women’s rights and freedoms.

Ayom Deng Whol, who chairs the South Sudan Women’s Constitutional Coalition (SSEWCC) told SCR News that the 30 percent for women’s participation pledged by the SPLM should be engraved in the Constitution.

The Transitional Constitution reserves 25 percent of public posts for women.

She added that women’s 30 percent should be represented at all levels and institutions including independent commissions, judiciary and the petroleum sector.

Ms. Ayom said the women of South Sudan fought very hard for independence and many died in the struggle.

She noted that by including more women on public institutions, their capacity will be enhanced.

Ms. Ayom added that South Sudan has more women than men.

The SSWCC is a group of South Sudanese women, men and other supporters who are committed to ensuring fair female representation to build the new Republic through a participatory and inclusive constitutional development process.
