The president of the republic said he favours a peaceful solution for the Abyei issue three days after his troops occupied the region and burnt the town to ashes.
Omar Hassan al-Bashir said in a speech in Khartoum yesterday that he was making efforts to remove tensions in Abyei and go ahead with a peaceful solution for Abyei, Reuters reported.
Yesterday, UNMIS accused armed elements to have looted and burnt Abyei.
The peacekeepers said the occupying Sudan Armed Forces were responsible for law and order in the region and should stop those criminal acts.
Some 20,000 residents fled for safety to Agok, in South Sudan.
