The UN mission strongly condemned the burning and looting currently being carried out by armed elements in Abyei town.

In a press statement issued this afternoon, UNMIS said the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) were responsible for maintaining law and order in the areas they control.

UNMIS called upon the Government of Sudan to urgently ensure that SAF elements fulfil their responsibility and intervene to stop the criminal acts of looting and burning.

Goss information minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin told the press yesterday that reports from Abyei town showed SAF elements deeply engaged in looting the property belonging to the Dinka Ngok residents displaced by Friday and Saturday’s heavy fighting.

Dr. Marial condemned the act saying it does not suit soldiers from the national army or Sharia law followers.
