The Members of South Sudan’s reconstituted National Elections Commission (NEC) took the oath of office as of Monday 8th January 2024 and pledged to engage the public about the election.
According to the Roadmap, South Sudan is expected to hold general elections in December 2024 but only SPLM revealed their candidate for the presidential seat.
The reconstitution of members of the National Election Commission is considered as a significant step towards the first national elections in South Sudan since independence.
President Salva Kiir Mayardit who officiated the swearing-in ceremony has urged the National Election Commission to work around the clock to prepare the country for elections.
During the oath-taking ceremony of members of the newly reconstituted National Election Commission, the Minister of Information, Michael Makuei Lueth was also sworn in as a member of the National Constitutional Review Commission.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the National Election Commission, Prof. Abednego Akok Kachuol said the Commission will embark on civic education across the country to achieve peaceful, fair, credible, and transparent elections.
The authority was overhauled and placed under new leadership in November as part of a peace deal signed in 2018.
Public feelings are mixed over the reconstituted NEC, with analysts, election observers, and some opposition parties divided on whether the elections should go ahead in December.
Some opposition leaders opposed the election believed the process would not be free and affair spark a return to conflict.
