UN secretary-general has pledged to work hard to avoid the independence of south Sudan in the 2011 referendum, a surprising position that risks to upset separatist forces in the region.

Ban Ki-Moon said whatever the result of the 2011 referendum on self-determination, people have to think how to manage the outcome, Agence France-Presse reported.

Mr. Ban added that the UN will work hard to avoid a possible secession of Southern Sudan.

Luka Biong Deng, GoSS minister for Presidential Affairs, did not welcome Mr. Ban’s intervention.

He said the most important thing is that the UN has the responsibility to implement the CPA.

Mr. Biong added that a unity that is voluntary is sustainable, but a unity that is forced on people is the unity that has led to continuous civil war.
