President Kiir attends UN General Assembly in New York

The President of the Republic of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit and the accompanying delegation are in New York to take part in the High-Level meetings of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The South Sudanese leader will participate in the 2023 Sustainable Development Goals Summit, where global leaders will outline strategies for transformative and accelerated actions towards the 2030 agenda.

The Summit’s theme is “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all”.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Presidential Affairs Minister Doctor Barnaba Marial Benjamin said President Kiir will address the UN General Assembly on the status of the implementation of the peace agreement and the steps the country is undertaking to prepare for 2024 general elections.

Press Secretary Lily Adhieu said the President is expected to address the session on Thursday, September 21, mainly on the progress of peace implementation and preparations for the 2024 general elections.

According to the press secretary, President Kiir will also speak about the crisis in Sudan and his role and commitment in trying to resolve the raging conflict in Sudan. 

The President was seen off at Juba International Airport by the First Vice President Doctor Riek Machar Teny and other senior government officials on Monday and was welcomed by the country’s UN Permanent Representative Akuei Bona Malual and ambassador to US Philip Jada.
