South Sudan President Salva Kiir has urged political parties in the country to use the current period provided by the Roadmap to give citizens the power to choose their leaders in a democratic election next year.

“I am urging all the political forces in the country to focus on using the current provided by the Roadmap to give our citizens the power to choose their leaders democratically next year,” the statement reads.

During the commemoration of the Martyrs Day on Sunday, Kiir stresses that for the country’s good, people must work on exiting from a perpetual transitional government position.

He said, “I say for the good of this country, we must work to exit from perpetual transitional government status.”

The President also used the day to remember the fallen heroes and heroines, especially Doctor John Garang De Mabior and other million colleagues in the gallant SPLA who perished during the liberation struggle and did not live to see the country’s independence.

Kiir emphasized his statement during the national address of the 12th South Sudan Independence that he will not take the country back to war.

The President urges the citizens to always remember the martyrs while reflecting on individual and collective efforts to move the country forward.

Despite Kiir’s call for a democratic election next year, the Unity government has failed to complete the pending tasks including the registration of the political parties and passing of the National Election bill.
