Women in Central Equatoria state are anticipating the celebration of their success in the April elections where for the first time they were given a quarter of the legislative places.

Ruth Kibiti, the Gender Affairs officer UNMIS, told participants at a workshop on gender and elections that women in Central Equatoria will celebrate their participation in the April elections while the world marks the 10th anniversary of the UN Security Council resolution that called for women’s participation as candidates in polls.

Mrs. Kibiti said that women should also put much effort in participating in peace building and dialogue forums.

She Kibiti said the consecration of the 25 percent of parliamentary seats reserved for women was a struggle for southern Sudanese women and they need to congratulate themselves for it.

Mrs. Kibiti was speaking at a workshop organized by the UNMIS Gender Unit and joint assistance from Civil Affairs and Electoral Assistance Division in Juba.

The one-day workshop drew some 50 women from all political parties across Sudan.
The event aimed at creating awareness on gender concepts and linking it to election, explaining policy instruments that promote women’s participation in decision making and creating awareness on women participation on elections.
