The Rwandan community in Juba observed the 17th commemoration of genocide on Saturday at a small gathering in the UN headquarters under the theme “Upholding the truth, preserving the dignity.”

Addressing the participants, Joseph Rutaban, Rwandan ambassador to Sudan, said that the day was used to remember the people who were massacred and pay respects to their souls.

In reference to the day’s theme, he said that telling the truth about the genocide was the only way that would lead the country to genuine reconciliation.

GoSS minster of Information, who was the guest of honor, Barnaba Marial Benjamin, said the relationship between Rwanda and South Sudan was strong because one of the Rwandan leaders fought alongside the SPLA during the liberation struggle.

In about one hundred days, one million Tutsis and moderate hutus where slaughtered in April 1994.
