The newly built ministry of Education, Science and Technology in Eastern Equatoria was officially opened yesterday in Torit by the Governor of the state.
The structure, which is said to be the first of its kind in the ten states of Southern Sudan, has been built in less than two years, Radio Emmanuel reported.State Minister for Education, Prof. Ben Ataba, said the planning of the office has taken into account the needs of teachers by providing them with a resources centre that will cater for in service training.
Prof. Ataba added that the Ministry’s conference hall can be used by other government and private institutions at a given fee to assist in the maintenance of the building.
He promised to add a library and a computer centre to the facility.
Prof. Ataba said that in the past four years the ministry was busy rebuilding education facilities and bringing pupils to school.
This year it will concentrate on sustained training of teachers in collaboration with UNICEF and other partners.
The building accommodates 14 offices, one conference hall and a Teachers Resource Centre at a cost of over 3.2 million Sudanese pounds.
The Ministry also added store facilities, generator room and external toilets to the complex.
