The Darfur peacekeeping force known as UNAMID is getting five tactical helicopters from Ethiopia to boots its capacity.

UNAMID said in a press release on Thursday it will meet with the Ethiopian authorities in Addis Ababa to finalize the details for the deployment of five tactical helicopters to Darfur.

Senior UNAMID officials met with representatives from the Governments of Sudan and Ethiopia to go over the logistics of the deployment of an Ethiopian Tactical Helicopter Unit to the Mission.

The Unit’s main body will arrive in Nyala, South Darfur, on Friday, while five helicopters are scheduled to join UNAMID’s peacekeeping force in mid-February.

UNAMID says that the Ethiopian helicopters will significantly enhance UNAMID’s capabilities to stabilize the security situation in Darfur.
