SPLM CANDIDATURES ON STIFF COMPETITION FOR A PLACE IN THE ELECTIONS

The number of candidates presenting their applications for different positions on the SPLM card for the April elections was much bigger than its was expected and there is stiff competition for a place in the many party lists.

SPLM chairperson for the Electoral College in Central Equatoria, Oba Cecilia, told SCR News that eight candidates have applied for the Central Equatoria governorship, while sixty people want to run for a seat in Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly, one hundred for the State parliament and fourteen for the national assembly.

She added that the stiff competition has shied away female contestants for the governorship seat.

Ms. Oba said that many women applied to be MP’s at state, southern Sudan and national assemblies.

She explained that the SPLM political bureau will scrutinized the applicants submitted by the state secretariat in order to make the final selection.

Ms. Oba added that unsuccessful candidates are still part of the SPLM and they have a role to play in the party.

She affirmed that a period to appeal shall be guaranteed to the applicants who feel unsatisfied with the final results.
