CHURCH WORLD SERVICE LAUNCHES 2010 EMERGENCY APPEAL FOR DARFUR

The Church World Service (CWS) launched yesterday its 2010 Emergency Appeal for Darfur to raise 1.2 million US Dollars to benefit populations in Nyala and Ed Daein, in South Darfur, and Zalingei and Garsilla, in West Darfur.CWS says in the Darfur Appeal’s presentation that funds will support nutrition and feeding centres for the displaced, water and sanitation projects, psycho-social, peace-building and protection efforts, and community empowerment projects.

The overall annual budget for CWS-supported efforts in Darfur reaches 12.36 million dollars.

In 2009, CWS provided assistance to 300,000 people in South and West Darfur.

The service wants to continue operating and maintaining 38 water system sites for the displaced, serving some 167,805 persons, and providing health services to more than 170,000 persons living in camps and rural communities.

CWS is a U.S.-based faith organization that works with partners to eradicate hunger and poverty and to promote peace and justice around the world.

In Darfur, CWS works with the network Action by Churches Together humanitarian program in Darfur assisting approximately 350,000 beneficiaries in the region.
