More than one hundred people have applied in Yei to join the Southern Sudan Police Services in the ongoing recruitment process in Yei River County, Central Equatoria State.
Field Administrator for Yei police, Martin Izzy Simon, told Spirit FM that more applications were still being expected before yesterday’s deadline.

Mr. Izzy disclosed that 60 applicants from Yei River County would be selected to take a one-year police training course.

Interviews for those who have applied for the police recruitment are expected to be conducted today at Yei Freedom Square.

The Government of South Sudan plans to recruit 300 young police officers in Central Equatoria State during 2010 to counter increasing criminality in the state.

The majority of police officers in Southern Sudan are former SPLA combatants who were integrated into the force after the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed.

Dr. Pius Subek, Juba County Commissioner and a candidate to Central Equatoria Governorship, told Spirit FM that the police was facing manpower challenges in service delivery due to a big number of aged officers.

Mr. Subek observed that the aged officers could not serve efficiently and hence the need to recruit young and able bodied officers to boost police services.
