At least 35 civilian staffers and peacekeepers were killed in hostile action in 2009, the UN said yesterday.
The UN Committee for the Security and Independence of the International Civil Service said in 2009 at least 28 civilian staffs and seven peacekeepers were killed due to acts of violence.

Six blue helmts were killed in Darfur in three separate incidents.

The seventh, the deputy force commander in Sudan, was shot dead by unknown gunmen while on home leave in Pakistan.

The UN civilian staff members were killed in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Gaza Strip and Somalia.

UN Staff Union President, Stephen Kisambira, said once again this year UN staff had to pay with their lives for their effort to assist populations in distress.
