Lamu port, in Kenya, will be one of the deepest harbours in the Indian Ocean and the biggest in Africa and its development represents an alternative for south Sudan’s oil exports.
The government of southern Sudan has already announced the construction of its first oil refinery in Warrap state to process its huge crude reserves.

Kenya’s consul general in Juba, Dr. Joseph Kiplagat, told SCR News that the port is a natural facility to serve East and Central Africa states.

Dr. Kiplagat said the Lamu port is already under construction and is expected to be operational in 2012.

Dr. Kiplagat added that the port will have an oil refinery and an airport to increase transport access to the area.

He said the new harbour will overshadow existing ports in Eastern and Southern Africa.
