Juba Central prison is to speed up court processes against prisoners detained without trial, an official has said today.
William Ladu Abel is the Director of Juba Central prison. He told SCR news that his prison has more inmates waiting trial than those who are already serving sentences.

Mr. Ladu said some prisoners have no reasons to be in detention and therefore need to have their cases processed in order to be released.

He added that the number of prisoners without trial is big because accusers do not appear in court when judges mark audiences and prison authorities are forced to keep the accused under custody.

Mr. Ladu said that the prisoners without trial will be brought before the judges as soon as possible after the Director General meets the court and police authorities.

On January 1, GoSS president Salva Kiir Mayardit visited Juba Central prison and demanded that prisoners in custody to be tried as soon as possible.

President Kiir said during the visit that prison waders have to concentrate on activities other than looking after untried prisoners.
