The joint African Union-United Nations peacekeeping mission in Darfur and the Sudanese Government are taking steps to boost the safety of blue helmets in the region following a surge in attacks against the mission in recent months.

The Governmen and UNAMID signed yesterday in Khartoum an agreement, following a working session on December 20 to discuss how to reduce the number of incidents, UN News Agency reported.

Earlier this month, five Rwandan peacekeepers were killed in two separate incidents in Darfur, bringing to 22 the totalr of blue helmets slain in the region since UNAMID deployed at the start of 2008.

The number of ambushes, kidnappings and carjacking against UNAMID personnel has also risen rapidly in the past months.
