Women refugees in Eastern Sudan camps face many dangers like human trafficking and sexual violence, and need special protection, a UN official said.
Africa Bureau Director of the UN refugee agency, George Okoth-Obbo, said that there are at least 66,000 refugees living in camps in Eastern Sudan who faced difficulties accessing basic services, education and protection.

Mr. Okoth-Obbo added that female refugees in particular risk human trafficking, sexual violence, abuse and rape.

The UNHCR Africa Director said that the protection of female refugees was a high priority for his agency.

Mr. Okoth-Obbo also noted that there were 15,000 children in the 12 refugee camps in the East.

He added that 6,000 of these children lack primary education because refugee schools have not the capacity to absorb them and many more fail to attend secondary school because families cannot afford the fees.
