Cardinal Gabriel Zubeir Wako of Khartoum told the attendants this morning in his opening remarks that the Church in the Sudan is going through a crucial time after the political separation of the South from the North.
The SCBC president dismissed reports that the government in Khartoum has threatened not to issue permits for foreign priests who encouraged Southerners to vote for secession.
Cardinal Wako said the main objective of the meeting was to focus on ways of strengthening solidarity and cooperation among the bishops regardless of July 9.
Archbishop Paulino Lukudu Loro of Juba said in his welcoming speech Sudan was never going to be the same and there were going to be major structural changes in the Church and the SCBC.
The extraordinary meeting will also tackle the issues related to the church’s finance and its structures after independence.
