The United Nations Office for Project Services or UNOPS’ cash transfer project has supported five thousand five hundred people in Torit Municipality, according to Albino Beda Paul, Municipal Council Block Coordinator.
The project where each beneficiary gets a cash of 62,700 SSP, targeted vulnerable people, single mothers, child headed families and widows, Radio Emmanuel reported.
Beda says the support was for Covid-19 response and the beneficiaries are eligible to receive the cash freely without any terms and conditions applied to help them cope up with the situation.
“Total beneficiaries is five thousand five hundreds within Torit Municipality, these are the people benefiting from the cash, there are categories, one the vulnerable ones, two, the child headed families their families are in problems, three the widows, four the single mothers who their husbands might be in front line and no one to support at home and also there are others with husbands but in problems and these are among the targeted groups, also the disabled, the pregnant mothers. There are vulnerable people who are supported by their families and those ones are not eligible for support. It is Covid19 response and no one is to work, they are given the cash direct, it’s their rights to get the money”, he explains.
Atto Siama Joseph, who benefited from the project, urges fellow vulnerable people to save the money in order to pay their children’s school fees.
“We are now for exams, we are giving exams to the children and in only two weeks we are going to begin registration, please keep this money to help register your children in school to avoid the tendency that there is no money, yet you have this money, keep it do not drink it, we the teachers we are pitying for the children in the school more especially we the mothers when the children are send out. So keep the money so that it helps your child, after the two weeks, you will come and register your child and buy some scholastic requirements”, she advises.
Whereas women who benefited from the support say the cash helped them to pay fees for their children and also meet their daily needs.
Some say it will help them with shelter as the rain season is nearing, it will help them make tukuls for themselves.
UNOPS has been helping the community in Torit with cash and for this month is the last support they are offering to their beneficiaries.
