Eastern Equatoria paid tribute to late Emilio Teffeng, the man who commanded the famous 1955 Torit uprising, with a memorial mass on Saturday at his ancestral land in Imurok village.

The Vicar General of the Catholic Diocese of Torit Fr. Celestino Muras was the main celebrant, Emmanuel Radio reported.

Fr. Muras said the memorial mass was in thanksgiving for the forefathers and their good deeds and for their souls.

Mr. Teffeng was a commander of the Torit Corps who staged an uprising against Khartoum over 55 years ago.

Fr. Muras stressed that the celebration was an occasion to know late Teffeng better and his contribution for the history of South Sudan through the testimony of those who knew him personally.

State officials including the Eastern Equatoria governor, as well as the former governor, and other dinitaries attended the memorial mass organized by the family of late Teffeng.

Mr. Teffeng was born in 1911 at Loudo village, Imurok Payam of Torit County and died in March 1974.
