The Chairperson of South Sudan Women, Peace, Monitoring and Advocacy Group has cautioned South Sudan over crimes committed against women and young girls.
Theresa Siricio Iro says it is a collective responsibility of every citizen to ensure that women are protected against all harmful traditional norms in the society.
She also calls for equal opportunities to both women and men.
“The women’s peace agenda should be given the number one opportunity because women have got so much to deliver. You know woman is the first responsible person bringing up the child from the womb and out and the first Education of a child and its woman who participate at least seventy percent of that Education. So it is very important to support women to try our level best to avoid the crime against women. We have worked collectively for the protection and the prevention of crimes and promote the protection of women and girls in all means and put them in Education and try together to fight harmful traditional norms that keep women behind”, said Sirisio.
Theresa Sirisio says the mandate of South Sudan Women, Peace, Monitoring and Advocacy Group is to ensure full participation of women in politics and nation building.
“We want to come up with gender streaming policies so that people recognize that women are vital partners.” she added.
“In the South Sudan women peace and security monitoring and advocacy group, we want to make sure that there’s many full participation of women in nation building and in politics. That women build their capacities so that we come together as women to address the challenges that are facing women to close the gender gaps that are drilling women behind you always find that there’s a gender gap. Ours is to come up with the gender streaming policies so that people recognize that a woman is a vital partner in all nation building activities in politics so that together with men we go side by side to develop the nation and to build the nation”.
The workshop that aims at enhancing gender responsive governance was under the theme, “Empowering women leaders, Women for peace”.
It brought about 50 women from community based organisations, civil society, business organisations and other organisations.
