Police authorities in Eastern Equatoria State have confirmed the arrest of a security person in Torit, for unnecessary shooting on Monday evening.
Major Justine Keleopas Takuru says the man gunshot anyhow at around 9pm under the influence of alcohol.
He regrets the actions of the soldier as it created fear within the community.
Takuku says the person is under police custody and investigations are ongoing.
“It happened yesterday at around 9:02 or 9:03 minutes, the gun shot was at Gumbo resident across the river, we have our brothers from the community police, they called and said there was a gunshot of three bullets, and we asked who was shot. They said there is an army belonging to the national security department residing around the County headquarters and from the community policing they noticed that the army was drunk and he says he shot the gun out of happiness, and the army was taken to his department and undergoing investigation,” he added.
Takuru says the security situation is calm, urging soldiers to keep their guns at duty stations, but not at home.
“It has taken time in town here without hearing gunshot, and yesterday, the gunshot brought fear to the citizens, and there was many phone calls, I would like to say people should take heart, everyone with gun should keep it in a store, go for your duty use it and keep it in the store after use, now there is nothing in town that should let someone to move with guns at home and at work, you better leave the gun at the duty station, you go home and come you will get your gun, like yesterday, children are for exams and with the gunshot, the children will be fearing and close their books, if they fail, God will ask you, because now the situation is calm in town, nothing wrong, no gun , no noise last week there were parties, happy birthday till morning Saturdays and Sundays, with this calmness, people should not repeat issues of gunshot”, said Takuru.
The spokesperson made the remarks to Radio Emmanuel in an exclusive interview on Tuesday in his office.
