A Catholic priest is questioning if South Sudan has legalized consumption of opium or not because the rate at which school going children and youth is using it is very high.

Fr Tom Poru Martin said many people have become opium growers in Yei and other parts of South Sudan and it is negatively affecting the youth, Radio Easter reported.

Yei Bishop Erkolano Lodu Tombe blamed the elders, youth and teachers for not taking action against children smoking opium.

He called on school authorities to dismiss any child who gets involved in it.

The speakers made the remarks on Sunday during first mass at Christ the King Cathedral in the Catholic Diocese of Yei.
