The youth of Lakes State have been advised to keep their traditional morals instead of fighting the law.
The advice came from the Director General in Lakes State Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Martin Makur Malual, in reaction to a hike of underage pregnancies in Rumbek.Youths in Lakes State are complained against judges who send offenders to prison for up to ten years for having sex and impregnating under age girls saying the law is against Dinka traditions.
Mr. Makur told Good News Radio that the law was prepared by the paramount chiefs, endorsed by the State Assembly, and ratified by the Governor into the Customary Law of Lakes State and judges just implement it.
He said only paramount chiefs and other cultural leaders could revise the customary laws and shorten prison terms or even abolish them.
Mr. Makur advised young men to respect both themselves and the girls under the age of consent, adding that they are forgetting traditional Dinka morals that forbid sex outside marriage.
He blamed the misbehaviour of young girls on their mothers and grandmothers who should be their keepers.
