Militias attacked the centre of Malakal town early in the morning bringing back fear and confusion into the much beleaguered capital of Upper Nile.
At around four AM an armed group said to belong to self-styled Shilluk commander Oliny entered Malakal town and began shooting near the market, a local source told SCRN.SPLA forces intervened and there was fierce battle with heavy guns around Malakal stadium and Salaam hostel areas.
The attackers were chased out of the town through Malakia area and beyond the airport and by 11 AM shooting stopped.
SPLA spokesperson Colonel Phillip Aguer Panyang said the situation was calm this evening and the SPLA was in full control.
He added that 23 militias were killed and four SPLA were wounded in the clashes.
Our source added that two soldiers were found dead near the stadium and one army pick-up burnt.
Another source said over the phone some civilians were wounded by crossfire.
She added that the shops remained closed and there was distant sound of gunfire about 4 PM.
Forces loyal to Oliny fought with the SPLA last Sunday at Wuac village, South of Malakal.
Renegade George Athor said that Mr. Oliny had joined him in the rebellion against the government of South Sudan.
