Malaria has been reported as the leading disease at Nimule Hospital in Magwi County of Eastern Equatoria State since January, Matron Catherine Abadia reported.

She said “This killer disease attacks both the young and adult people mostly during rainy seasons.

The matron cites diarrhoea and typhoid as some of the common diseases reported in the facility.

Abadia advises the community to sleep under mosquito net and destroy stagnant water to reduce the disease.

“In general, from January up to now, the leading common disease that is known by everybody is malaria. The second disease is watery diarrheal, that we have seen the rising of the cases within these days plus others [diseases]. Others are also high, but malaria is the leading. All under five and adult are there. They all have those cases of malaria because during this rainy season, you can see the flow of the patients and the cases”’ Abadia reported.

Abadia mentions that malaria is caused by not sleeping under treated mosquito nets, and availability of stagnant water that act as a breeding place for the mosquitoes.

She calls for awareness to the community about the following measures of preventing the disease.

“The leading disease in the country is malaria. So the causes of malaria are, stagnant water, and people are not making use of their mosquito nets. These are the main issues plus our whether during rainy season, we get most of the area bushy that is why we get a lot malaria cases”, said the medical worker.

She calls for awareness to the community on preventive measures.

“For us to control the disease, there is need to create more a wears to people to follow some preventive measures. so that we can follow some preventive measures, like sleeping under mosquito nets, destroying stagnant water and slash the bushes around the home to reduce the cases of malaria. We need to work hard to follow the preventive measures especially during this rain season”, she stressed.

The speaker made the statement to Radio Emmanuel in an exclusive interview at Nimule Hospital on Friday.
