The UN expressed its growing concern at the ongoing operations by the SPLA against the rebel forces in Jonglei State and its impact on the civilian population.

UN Missin in the Sudan (UNMIS) said in statement on the situation in Jonglei State the Government of Southern Sudan has a responsibility to address security threats within its territory.

The Mission added that it must do so in accordance with international humanitarian law and allow UNMIS to access victims of the conflict.

UNMIS called on all parties to refrain from any actions and activities that may result in the harm of civilians or that may endanger their lives and property.

The UN peacekeepers appealed to all groups to allow them access to the areas where SPLA is battling forces loyal to George Athor in order to assess the humanitarian situation and immediate needs on the ground.

A source from Old Fangak told SCR News via e-mail that although the area is protected by SPLA soldiers both the river and air space were closed to traffic to cut off Mr. Athor’s supply lines.
