The UN Security Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to extend the mandate of its peacekeeping force in Abyei known as UNISFA until November 15.
The Council called for prioritization of the safety and security of civilians in Abyei, account for stability of the region, and has an option for UNISFA exit strategy.
The resolution expressed concern “about Sudan and South Sudan’s efforts to impede UNISFA from fully executing its mandate by withholding visas for police, blocking appointment of a civilian deputy head of mission.
They resolution was also concern of both countries trials to deny access to Anthony airport that eases UNISFA’s logistical challenges, reduce transport costs, and enhance safety and security for UNISFA personnel.
The Council said the delayed deployment of UN police “prevents UNISFA from fulfilling its security and protection mandate and holds the potential to create a security vacuum in Abyei”.
The Security Council urged Sudan and South Sudan to make progress in establishing temporary administrative and security arrangements for Abyei.
It encouraged the AU Union and UN special envoys for the Horn of Africa to intensify their mediation role to achieve the arrangements stipulated in 2011 agreement.
Earlier Sudan called for immediate reduction in UNISFA’s strength, but South Sudan insisted on security concerns in Abyei and Western Kordofan.
