The assessment of food security in Lakes State kicked off on Monday involving two teams expected to cover the eight counties in about ten days.

The review of food stocks in Lakes State was decided in meeting convened by South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (SSRRC) last Friday with members from the Ministries of Agriculture, Health, Education, and Rural Development, and representatives from WFP, FAO, and other international and national NGOs.

Lakes State SSRRC Director Philip Kot Job told Good News Radio that there was a follow up staff training for the officials who are carrying out the survey.

He added that this year food insecurity in the State is 13 percent higher than last year.

Mr. Kot said the two teams are already on the field evaluating the food reserves the eight counties.

He expects the teams to finish the assessment within ten days.

Mr. Kot called on the local communities to cooperate with the officials, because their findings will help address the local needs more accurately.

The food security assessment is focusing on food availability, access and use taking into account the recent influx of returnees.

The assessment will also identify specific vulnerable areas and the number of people affected.
