Eastern Equatoria state government strategic food reserves are almost finished and hunger is threatening the region again.
The state sounded the hunger alert and called for relief aid to rescue the citizens from famine.Agriculture minister Jerome Surur Gama told Emmanuel Radio that there are only about 130, 000 bags of grains remaining at the government stores in Kapoeta County.
He added that part of the food reserve was used to support the referendum exercise during the polling days.
Mr. Surur called of relief organizations to rebuild the food reserve to avoid loss of lives through hunger.
Emmanuel Radio learned that about three tons of grains rot in the stores last year due to poor storage.
Mr. Surur blamed the food decay on poor implementation of government policies.
He added that the government is losing many precious resources that could be use to save lives of hungry citizens in the state.
Mr. Surur said the state is facing a worse food shortage than in the previous years.
The Eastern Equatoria state strategic food reserve was established in 2009 at a time of severe famine in the region.
