The University President Omar al-Bashir promised to Torit is unlikely to be constructed following the overwhelming vote for secession by South Sudan.

Eastern Equatoria state minister for Education, Science and Technology, Michael Lopuke Lotyam, said the university that was meant to make unity of Sudan attractive turned out to be empty political talk, Emmanuel Radio reported.

He added that the university only received from the Khartoum government a charter without any funds to make the project operational.

Mr. Lopuke urged GoSS Ministry of Higher Education to take up the challenge to establish the University of Torit for Science and Technology this year.

President Al-Bashir visited Torit last March during his political campaign and pledged that the government of Sudan would build a university in Torit.

He also promised to rebuild a catholic church in Kapoeta that was destroyed by the government army during the two decades war.
