UN peacekeepers are patrolling Malakal town after Joint Integrated Units’s northern sections clashed with each other last week and the airport is fully operational.

UN spokesman Martin Nesirky told a news briefing in New York yesterday that the UN urged the parties to remain calm and exercise caution.

Violence broke out in Malakal, Upper Nile State, between last Thursday and Saturday and then spread to two barracks in Renk County.

Mr Nesirky added that Malakal airport was fully operational and all movement restrictions were lifted.

At least 54 soldiers were killed and 85 wounded in JIU’s clashes in Malakal and Renk.
