A 19-year-old man was beaten to death in Bur Payam of Torit County, Police authorities in Torit, Eastern Equatoria confirmed.
Eastern Equatoria State Police spokesperson Major Justin Cleophas Takuru told Radio Emmanuel that the incident took place early last week.
he noted that the deceased identified as Elijo Otwari met his death in the hands of his brother in-law after failing to pay needed marriage charges.
‘When he was investigated, he said the deceased took his sister and they agree to pay eleven cows, but the deceased paid only three cows and did not pay the rest for many years, so when they met at the dancing ground he asked the late in-law when he is going to complete the payment of his sister’s dowry. So he took a stick and told him if you are not going to tell me I will show you and hit the deceased on his head and fell down’, Major Cleophas explained.
‘The deceased was taken to the nearby health facility and before reaching the health facility he passed on and that is how he died. The perpetrator is now in the custody and we shall hand him over for trial’, he added.
Eastern Equatoria State Police Spokesperson advised communities not to use violence to solve family differences, but follow legal procedures.
‘I would like to inform the general public that we should not use violence to solve our problems, if we have problem let us report to the police, and tell that this person has taken my daughter or my sister, There are ways how we can help on how to open a court case or even to the chief that is how we can start resolving our problems. There are legal ways we can give so you can be able to get your right don’t fight that person like beating of course you will injure someone so that’s not good’, he appealed.
Major Cleophas pointed out that ‘when you kill a person you will lose your right and now it is you to pay that person so you will pay more than what is needed and even your daughter will also pay for this is what I would like to tell you’.
The spokesperson recalled that his office in the past recorded several disagreements over dowry related cases.
