One hundred and eighty seven households in Mairo Village of Torit County have been declared free from open defecation.
The declaration made on Monday by INTERSOS organization follows a successful implementation by the community members after digging latrines.
INTERSOS organization in collaboration with UNICEF supported the activity, where one hundred families own pit latrines now.
One of the residents from Mairo village, who is a single parent, Angwech Cecilia, expresses happiness for the support and recognition towards the work done by the community.
She says it has not been easy to live in a home without a pit latrine.
Cecilia advises everybody to have pit latrines in their houses for a health environment.
Mairo Youth Representative, James Iyan, says the community members now have pit latrines but still lack hand washing facilities.
Amanya Angelo Momoi is INTERSOS Hygiene Officer. He says his organization put Mairo village as the first priority because of poor hygiene and sanitation.
The Hygiene Officer promises to provide wash materials to the community that has not yet received the items.
Angelo says INTERSOS has been engaging about 29 villages within Torit County to dig pit latrines, but only fourteen have been declared free from open defecation.
