The troika which comprises the United States of America, United Kingdom, and Kingdom of Norway call on government of South Sudan to complete formation of the Revitalised Government of National Unity.
In a joint statement it says formation of the Transitional Government of National Unity in February was a major step forward in South Sudan’s peace process.
It adds since then, a new challenge has emerged, not just for South Sudan, but COVID-19 is a global challenge that will have far-reaching political and economic impacts.
The troika is deeply concerned at the increased levels of violence across the country; this causes immense suffering for people of South Sudan and jeopardizes any gains that have been made across the country.
‘In Jonglei, the vacuum created by the lack of governance has exacerbated cycles of inter communal violence while in Central Equatoria, the ceasefire signed in January has broken down and reports of sexual violence against women and girls continue’, the statement reads in parts.
They say now is the moment for President and Vice Presidents, supported by Intergovernmental Authority on Development and the peace guarantors to agree on the selection of governors and move forward for the benefit of people of South Sudan.
They say any further delay creates uncertainty that undermines the transition process, slows the fight against COVID-19, and holds back efforts to end the violence that now threatens the hard-won peace.
