Discussions are under way on the substitution of the Sudanese pound when the south becomes independent in July.
The president of the Bank of South Sudan (BoSS) told the press yesterday that negotiations were underway on how to phase out the Sudanese pound.Elijah Malok said the pound was imposed on the north by the CPA and Khartoum may go back to the Sudanese dinar as soon as the south becomes independent.
He noted that negotiations of redeeming the pound and bringing it back to the BoSS coffers are also underway.
Mr. Amlok suggested that bordering states could continue to trade with the pound after independence to redeem the currency.
The Sudanese pound replaced the Dinar in 2007, but its value has fallen in recent months due to political uncertainty, a surge in prices and a strong US dollar.
Mr. Malok said the final decision on Sudan’s currency future would be taken by the political leaderships of Khartoum and Juba.
