The Catholic Bishop of Rumbek yesterday led the faithful in a mass to pray for the eternal rest of Fr. Luigi Penzo.

Comboni Missionary Fr. Penzo died in Milan, Italy, last Friday, after many years of service in the Sudan, Good News Radio reported.

Bishop Caesar Mazzolari said in his homily that the Fr. Penzo wished to die in Sudan where he spent most of his missionary life.

The Bishop described the missionary as a person of “tremendous simplicity” and great love of Christ which attracted people to him.

Bishop Mazzolari said Fr. Penzo played a big role in the formation of the Sudanese Church personnel and catechists.

The bishop recalled Fr. Penzo’s love for the Comboni Missionaries congregation, serving in the general administration in Rome.

He was also the spiritual director of many church people who will miss his advise.

Fr. Luigi Penzo was one of the pioneers of the major seminary for diocesan priests in Sudan.
