The United Nations Children agency or UNICEF in Yei is conducting a two-day corona virus disease awareness training for local leaders including chiefs.
According to Radio Easter, the training which started on Thursday targets eleven chiefs from the former Yei Municipal Council.
Alex Jubek Santo, UNICEF’s Ebola virus consultant, said the course is to support and empower community leaders to know the signs and symptoms of covid-19.
Jubek explained that the only way to empower the leaders is by training them so that they can disseminate the covid-19 messages to their people.
He called on the chiefs to avoid handshaking and keeping all precautionary measures including social distancing and avoiding overcrowding to prevent them from the pandemic.
Community leaders are the pillars and influencers of societies and they play a big role in preaching the message of covid-19, the consultant explained.
He says another objective of the training is to give the participants awareness about wrong information on corona and give them the right message.
The training conducted in phases accommodates only ten participants to observe social distancing.
The capacity building training is expected to conclude with the traditional healers next week.
