The GoSS minister of Information said South Sudan has been nominated as the new nation’s name.
Barnaba Marial Benjamin is also a member of the steering committee which is working on the name of the country along with other issues, including the flag, coat of arms and national anthem.He told SCR News that twelve names had been suggested, including Nile Republic and Kush Republic.
He added that many people preferred the name Republic of South Sudan because it has been in use for the last six years.
Dr. Marial added that the nominated name will be forwarded to the Council of Ministers and the Southern Sudan Assembly so that it can be chosen before the end of the interim period in July.
He said the public will be given an opportunity to debate on the name they prefer to label the new nation.
